Commission Report

by Ibby Gilmore

& Barb Scaia

We hope all are enjoying the newness and freshness of Spring.

Thank you to all who donated money for the N.E.A.R. foodshelves.  This time of year is important as school lets out more families will need the shelves than before.  We appreciate your efforts and your understanding that money actually gets more food on those shelves!  Thank you also to all who guessed on the candy jar--those funds too will go to stock the foodshelves.  :)

Speaking of foodshelves,  There is an awesome new program out there that we'd like you to know about.  It is called "FARE FOR ALL"  It is operated by the Emergency Foodshelf Network.  You may have heard about this in the bulletins already.  There is a warehouse in New Hope that is open 2 Mondays a month from 8:30am to 7:00pm.  They offer fruits, vegetables, and meats at almost 40% below the cost of Cub or Rainbow.  Food can be purchased in bulk or in smaller quantities.  This warehouse is available for EVERYONE AND ANYONE.  THIS MEANS ANY OF US AT EPIPHANY OR ANY OF OUR FRIENDS.  It is not for foodshelf users.  All the money we would spend at this warehouse for our table would go to STOCK THE SHELVES FOR  the EFN.  What a cool way to feed ourselves and help others at the same time.  There are fliers (and more information) in the narthex with the address and dates to try this new food shopping experience.

At our last outreach meeting we talked about a program that has been active in the Metro area for over 5 years.  It is called City House.  This program works with other well established programs in the Metro area to add a spiritual element to all the services provided.  People who use this program could be battered women, from the prison system, have debilitating mental illness or chemical dependency.  These people are often individuals who have lost hope for themselves and have lost the light of Spirituality.  This program attempts to help along with the services and agencies that are already out there. Our own Rev. Cathy McDonald has been on the board of this program and I am certain she would be willing to talk with you about this.  At the outreach committee meeting we decided that Church of the Epiphany needed to be involved somehow--tune in next month to find out how we can help with City House.

For a Spring project we have a nifty idea up our sleeves.  We will be working with the MN chapter of the Pajama Program.  Read this article next month to find out how we at Epiphany can put smiles on faces and give youth a bit of a sense of peace at bedtime.

Just a reminder, Loaves and Fishes is alive and running one meal at a time.  This fine program which has been running since 1982 is now serving meals 5 days a week and at 8 locations in the Metro area.  We get the honor of serving again on the last Thursday of May.  This means for most of you 1 afternoon in May.  You do not have to pick out the menu, or pick up the food or even know how to cook.  All we need is your company and good humor and your hands on that last Thursday in May.  A sign up sheet will be up by the end of this month on the Outreach bulletin board.  Won't you join us and be one of the over 4000 volunteers for this organization???

Until May, bye bye  B and I

Outreach Minutes

MARCH 2008

Present:  Jennifer Kinser, Gary Garrison, Sandy Connor, Mother Neysa, Jane Kalin, Barbara Scaia, Ibby Gilmore

Mother Neysa opened the meeting with a prayer.

We finalized the NEAR food drive plans.  We decided last year to keep the monetary goal at $1500, even though we exceeded that amount last year.  No specific goal was set for pounds of food.  Sandy provided the candy jar.  Barbara will supervise the selling of chances as much as possible before the 10:30 service.  Gary will help Palm Sunday.  Linda Kipp made the thermometer to record our progress.

Gary talked about the Fare For All Express available to everyone regardless of need.  There will be an announcement in the bulletin and in church Sunday.

Barbara reported on the activities of the Community Awareness committee.  During the month of April we will address hunger in Hennepin County.  Barbara will find a speaker for the Adult Forum on the 27.  Gary will plan to speak at the Men's and Women's groups meetings on the 19th.  Throughout the month the youth will focus on the issue.  Plans are tentative, pending a meeting with the youth leaders.  Community Awareness plans activities to address health care funding in the County in the fall of 2008 and the disintegrating public infrastructure in the spring, 2009.

We discussed possible outreach activities for the future.  These included a pajama-story book collection to benefit the Pajama Program, collections to benefit ECS, and a potential fourth charity for the fourth Open Sing in July, City-House.  Ibby will talk with John.

PRISON MINISTRY

Matthew 25:36  I was in prison and you came to me.

St. David's, Minnetonka, began a ministry 10 years ago of leading a Sunday morning service of Morning Prayer at the ACF (Adult Corrections Facility) in Plymouth once a month.  One member of the team is from St. Edward's and in 2006 Deacon Charles Nelson and Cindy Clark from Epiphany joined the team.  The Chapel has 65 chairs and the 65 men residents inspire us with their enthusiasm for the day's scripture, singing and our witness talks.  Prayer requests are collected and about a dozen church members lift up the prisoners needs through out the hours of the day.  If you would like to be on the Prayer Team contact Deacon Charles Nelson.

We reach out helping hands into our community and across the world.  We work together with the NEAR food shelf, Dinner At Your Door, Loaves & Fishes, Episcopal Relief & Development, Episcopal Community Services, Heifer Project, CROP Walk, Giving Tree ... and more!

Local

Dinner-At-Your-Door:  An outreach program in conjunction with other area churches that delivers prepared meals to the home bound.  Drivers can be on a monthly schedule or on-call.

N.E.A.R.  The local food shelf and emergency help program for people in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis.  This program is sponsored by a consortium of churches in the area.  A collection ark is in the front entry way for on-going collection of food.

Loaves and Fishes:   Every time a month has a fifth Thursday (four to five times per year) we join with St. George’s parish to prepare and serve a hot meal at Holy Rosary Church in South Minneapolis. Come and help for as long as your schedule permits any time between 1:30 and 6:30 PM on fifth Thursdays.

Giving Tree:  Every Advent we adopt families who are clients of Episcopal Community Services and other organizations to help them have a happy Christmas.  A tree is set up in the Narthex with ornament tags showing suggested gifts.  People take a tag, purchase a gift and return it under the tree wrapped for distribution a week of two before Christmas.

National and International

CROP Walk:  On a Sunday afternoon in October we walk to raise money to end hunger in our nation.

Operation Christmas Child:  Children in our parish take shoe boxes to fill with toys and school supplies to send to other child for a Christmas present. Boxes are collected at Church in November to send through Samaritan’s Purse Organization.

Episcopal Relief and Development:  Episcopal Relief and Development sends money and other resources to people in need throughout the world.  Every time a natural disaster happens, ERD is there to help.  Money is collected as needed throughout the year.

Heifer Project:  In the Fall we bring in food in to church from our gardens to share the harvest. People take food home and leave a donation. In the Spring our children take home ark banks to be filled with coins in remembrance of people’s needs and blessings.  All proceeds go to the Heifer Project to purchase animals for people in third world countries.
